Temporary Art

From seasonal retail installations to events and parades, BAM selectively takes commissions for ephemeral art installations. Led by our New York studio, the temporary art pieces face challenges unlike our other disciplines. On the one hand a temporary art installation offers a great deal of freedom and creativity from the bonds of permanence and economy. However the design process of these projects must transcend the simple notion of concept we learn in design school. To make a real effect on hundreds or thousands of people who will enjoy a temporary installation, the designer must connect directly to popular motifs. Although a grounds for great experimentation, temporary art installation design requires an ability to understand and work within both high and low culture.

    Stage set folds in space to ensconce dj in a back-lit digital circuit pattern. Designed to work with 3-D mapped projections, the stage comes alive with the superimposition of moving images over the shifting and fading back-light of the circuits.

    For the Secret Garden Festival in Kortrijk, Belgium, BAM designs a garden without being there. Instructions for how to play “Garden Game” are emailed to Belgium. The game, played by dancers, determines the layout of hedge walls. Dancers locate 35 planting beds using dice, dials, string, and stakes. Beds are planted with leylandii, fagus, or bamboo. “The Chaotic Rise and Fall of the White Masked Man and Other Common Acts” is video art which views the garden as a stage for living. Co-artist, Martha Schwartz.

    In the spirit of BAM's Fallen Oak Installation at Cornell University (working with the given materials of a site), 780 plastic bags are recycled into a sun canopy over a courtyard house this summer in the Capital. Not only does the canopy provide colorful shade, but it creates a surprisingly peaceful background noise in the breeze.
